Jaffa Cakes | Bake Off Bake Along

Bake Off Bake Along - Week 1: Jaffa Cakes

I feel like I might be a bit late to the #BakeOffBakeAlong? But life got in the way and stopped me from trying my hand at a Bake Off challenge. Until now, because, let’s face it... who can resist a jaffa cake? I definitely can’t.

It feels so good to see The Great British Bake Off back on TV and brightening up our Wednesdays. GBBO definitely has me craving cakes even more than I did before. It also never fails to make me cringe and gasp with the things that happen.

Like forgetting which way up jaffa cakes are, or having to re-do a sponge, or the worst one: dropping it.

I still don’t know why some contestants go in on the first week with extravagant flavours and designs, like the cake shaped like an orange. I think Jane proved to us all with her lemon and poppy seed bundt cake that simple is sometimes best. Especially on the first week.

Are we allowed to pick favourites yet? Because I have. One being Val who exercises while she bakes and listens to cakes to check they are cooked. Can we keep her in for a few weeks please? Also Selasi is the most chilled out contestant, zero stress or worry on this guy and I don’t know how he does it.

Benjamina is my pick to win though. Her white chocolate and praline cake looked delicious. She seems so down to earth and a bit of a perfectionist with baking, which I can relate to.

Last year, I had serious FOMO for the #BakeOffBakeAlong. So this year I’m giving myself a challenge for the next ten weeks and joining in. Starting with the technical challenge, mainly because I don’t think I would ever actually bake them without this challenge.

Mary Berry’s recipe is the simplest thing you could ever dream of. You probably have all the items already in your cupboards and you can knock them up in a pinch. Which is great for me because now I’ve got some cakes to munch on for GBBO tonight. A valuable lesson I learnt last week.

Next time, I would definitely opt for thicker circles of jelly. Because the jelly is my favourite favourite of a jaffa cake - isn't it everyones? And if I gave them mroe time, probably neater chocolate on the top.

I really don't know how Mary got hers so neat!
